What’s the difference between the Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year?
The terms Chinese New Year and Lunar New Year are not exactly interchangeable and they’ve both created some controversy in recent years. In short, Chinese New Year is a specific term and Lunar New Year is a general one that can refer to any Lunar New Year celebration. The Chinese New Year is a Lunar New Year celebration, but not the only one. (For example, the Vietnamese Lunar Near Year holiday is called Tet.) The Chinese New Year is typically celebrated on the second new moon after the winter solstice. Some countries and cultures celebrate a lunar new year on the Chinese New Year date. Other countries/cultures celebrate on the first new moon after the Winter Solstice, and some have an entirely different date (for example, the Thai New Year on April 13). Each region has its own specific foods and traditions for their Lunar New Year celebration. Many Asian Lunar New Year celebrations include major elements of the Chinese New Year tradition, such as fireworks and the color red. Many, but not all, Asian countries use the Chinese Zodiac animal system. These Chinese Zodiac animal dot painting pages could be appropriate for a Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year lesson theme, depending on what you’re teaching and what holiday you’re focused on. The book The Great Race is a fun introduction to the Chinese zodiac for little learners. The Great Race tells the story of the Chinese zodiac animals in simplified Chinese, Pinyin, and English. How to use dot marker pages
These black and white worksheets are easy on your printer ink or copy budget. The blank circles on the worksheets are perfectly sized for popular dot marker brands like Do a Dot markers and Doodle Hog. We used classic Do a Dot markers for years, but my loyalties have shifted to Doodle Hog markers. They’re now our favorite dauber style markers. Doodle Hog markers are easier for little kids to grasp and they have a couple of small ridges on the cap that make it easier for little fingers to open and close the markers. At the time of writing, they’re also a better per unit price than the Do a Dot brand. I still think Do a Dot is an outstanding brand, but Doodle Hogs are easier for kids to use and a better value.
